Jaro Belfry

Image
In the year 1744, the Spaniards founded this building. This structure has a purpose; one of its functions is that it served as a military watchtower during that time. This structure is made from bricks, limestone, and fossils, and has a design in the Neoclassical style.   According to some historians online, this building weakened on July 17, 1787, due to an earthquake. In 1833, the building was finally restored under the leadership of an Augustinian friar, Fr. Jesse Alvarez. Some historians believe that in the years 1833 and 1881, an earthquake struck the Jaro belfry for the second time. However, the rebuilding of this structure was under the stewardship of Msgr. Mariano Cuartero, the first bishop of Jaro, in the month of January 25, 1948.   This belfry reminds us of the enduring value of faith, heritage, and resilience passed through generations. We root it in our hearts and souls. The shrine is designated as a National Historical Landmark.
